The Big Book of Tools
If there is one thing that we know about improving schools, it's that nothing has a greater impact on student learning than organizing teachers into collaborative teams committed to studying their practice together. But ask teachers who have ever worked in a PLC at Work and they will tell you that studying practice together isn't always as easy as it sounds. Studying practice together --- identifying essential outcomes, developing unit plans, creating assessments, analyzing results -- requires more energy and effort than doing the same work on your own. It also requires close coordination, negotiation, and compromise. The good news is that teams can create explicit structures to make teamwork more meaningful and efficient, a process introduced by eighth-grade classroom teacher and collaboration expert Bill Ferriter in this session.

One Step at a Time: Understanding the Stages of Team Development
Limited Capacity seats available

Like the students in any classroom, the learning teams in a school building come to the planning table at different stages of readiness for collaboration. Some are just beginning their work with one another and need to establish basic structures like norms and processes for making shared decisions. Others are well-prepared to engage in ongoing cycles of collective inquiry around their practice. Increasing collaborative capacity, then, depends on first understanding and then targeting the unique needs of each individual group.

In this session, participants will:
  • learn more about the stages of team development
  • Identify the stage of team development that best represents the work of their learning team -- or the teams that they are charged with supporting
  • be introduced to sets of logical next steps that teams at each stage of development can take to move their work forward

The Intersection of Trauma & Learning: Somatic Approaches for Wellbeing
What we know from research on trauma and stress is that when we don’t work through that and heal ourselves, the body can keep that trauma inside us. According to research done by neuroscientist Bessel Van Der Kolk, that memory is stored in our bodies and later comes up in physical symptoms and illnesses. He calls that unhealed stored trauma and stress “the issues in our tissues.” When practiced regularly, mind/body practices -- such as meditation, yoga, mindfulness, breathing techniques, Qigong -- which will be shared in this session, can help you heal your trauma and relieve your stress as well as build your window of tolerance, which is the space where new learning can happen as well as the space where we build up our ability to deal with the ever changing world around us without losing ourselves in the uncertainty of it all. Join us to learn some tips and strategies to build resilience and support yourself and others!

Equity & Access: Using UDL to Design Your Syllabus
The syllabus serves as a roadmap. It sets expectations, provides information about important dates and assignment deadlines, offers pathways for communication between the instructor, students and parents or guardians. The class syllabus guides students along a route to their rinal destination: course completion. And, like the GPS in your car, the syllabus becomes even more essential when students are at the highest risk for getting "lost." During this session we will use the syllabus as a concrete example of how UDL strategies can be applied to promote accessibility and support all students including English Language Learners and students with disabilities.

Painting with Purpose - Work Based Experience at Arkansas Deaf Career Center
Limited Capacity seats available

The best predictor of a successful career after high school is an actual paid job during high school! Arkansas School for the Deaf and Arkansas Deaf Career Center have created Work Based Experience through our Pre-ETS (Pre-Employment Transition Services) program. We have developed a painting business for our stendents, and they gain invaluable training and experience in all aspects of painting: measuring, prepping and priming surfaces, purchasing paints, products, tools and equipment, and then the actual work of painting. Students are currently working in three buildings on campus. We believe that our Painting with Purpose will not only enhance the aesthetics and functionality of our living, learning, and working spaces, but also provide real life training, work, and pay for our students.

Considerations for Teaching Foundational Literacy Skills to Students with Intensive Needs
After many years of limited research on effective instruction for students with Intellectual Disability (ID) (Polloway, et al., 2010), recent advances are encouraging. For quite some time, we have had evidence of the effectiveness of instruction of isolated phonics skills and word recognition (reviews by Browder, et al., 2006; Browder & Xin, 1998; Joseph & Seery, 2004). More recently, though, there has been some evidence of success with more comprehensive instruction (Allor, Mathes, Roberts, Cheatham, & Al Otaiba, 2014; Browder, Ahlgrim-Delzell, Courtage, Gibbs, & Flowers, 2008; Lemons et al., 2015).

Over the last four years, we have been examining the effects of a text-centered literacy instruction for students with ID. The instruction includes specially-designed early readers, along with brief lessons delivered by teachers and practice games led by paraprofessionals or tutors. This instruction promotes intensively teaching reading to students with low IQs or those who have not responded to other instruction. In addition to the necessity of explicit and systematic instruction, findings show that practitioners should employ high expectations when teaching students with ID to read. The study demonstrates how teachers may target comprehension through oral language while teaching basic word reading skills (phonics/word recognition).

Child Safety and Prevention Education: The Firefly Project
The internet is one of the single biggest factors affecting our children and their safety in society today. Teen Internet usage and attitudes about safety present potential risks, but also opportunities for education. The Firefly Project was created because the Morgan Nick Foundation believes education is the key to safety. When children recognize the dangers they can make good choices. Our safety and prevention education curriculum is taught to children in all levels of the school system, providing real world safety, internet safety skills, and abduction prevention education. We know that educators are on the first line of defense for students. You carry such an important role in our students lives as far as recognizing patterns of concern or red flags, but we also realize you are challenged with many additional tasks. Our goal was not to add something more but to lighten your load by providing you with everything you need at your fingertips for a quick and simple lesson that checks multiple boxes for you, and provides the critical safety education we know children need. This curriculum is written to bring the light of truth into a sometimes dangerous and scary world.

UPDATE: This presentation was recorded and is available on the DESE School Safety Training Page under Recorded Sessions.

Discourse in the Science Classroom

Scientific discourse is a means of engaging in scientific discussion that differs from everyday conversation, and often includes the need to support validity of scientific claims. Claims are validated through the careful identification of lines of evidence, which are connected back to the claim through purposeful reasoning. But how do we get students to find legitimate pieces of evidence from within a barrage of informational resources of varying degrees of reliability? Considering the diverse and multifaceted socio-cultural reference points that describe our students, as well as experiences with the norms of scientific communication, students need careful guidance along the pathway to productive conversation. Practiced with intentionality, scientific discourse can be a powerful tool allowing teachers and students to deeply engage with their content through authentic scientific experiences which support the natural emergence of reasoning processes accurately connecting evidence and claim. Additionally, students learn valuable socio-emotional skills necessary for meaningful collaboration and sound decision-making.

Limited Capacity seats available

This session models a safe, virtual space for individuals and small groups to engage in an uncommonly open, honest dialogue. Painting with Purpose - Work Based Experience at Arkansas Deaf Career Center

Taking Action: Connecting PLCs and RTI
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, educators face an unprecedented challenge: How to close the learning gaps created by months of school closures and uneven access to virtual learning opportunities?  Compelling evidence shows that response to intervention (RTI)—as known as multi-tiered system of support (MTSS)—can successfully engage a school’s staff in a collective process to provide every child with the additional time and support needed to learn at high levels. Yet, at many schools, this potential lies dormant, buried under layers of state regulations, district protocols, misguided priorities, and traditional school practices that are misaligned to the essential elements of RTI. In this keynote, Mike Mattos will show how the PLC at Work process creates the larger, school-wide framework required to successfully create a multi-tiered system of supports.

Come and learn from a team of presenters who have collaborated to develop and implement a co-teaching model in an Agriculture course. It's Just WORK Without the TEAM: Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Student
Educating a Deaf child is a complicated adventure that is not for the weak-spirited. At times roadblocks appear and a variety of experts are required to complete the journey. At Arkansas School for the Deaf we have a team consisting of Deaf educators, Speech Language Pathologists, Audiologists and support staff who are uniquely qualified in working with a student who is Deaf/Hard of Hearing. Where one skill ends, another begins with plenty of gray areas in between. Collaborative efforts are key to the student's success. Furthermore, the opportunity to learn from other experts is invaluable. These are stories of everyday teamwork among professionals that result in enhancing student outcomes. Through case study analysis, levels of collaboration will be observed and evaluated. Leave your ego at the door and learn how much fun it is to work as a team!
